Official Hand of Armageddon Discussion (BOA Trading Card Game)
« on: December 19, 2015, 01:56:17 pm »
Well guys, the title says it all! What are your thoughts, feelings, & ideas for the TCG of BOA?
Do you think we should have one? How do you think it should be?

I personally have a few wishes for this game:

- Lets make it a 100% less complicated than CKC.

- Lets make every kaiju unique in its own way that people can understand.

- Only the official kaiju can have their very own cards, but the ones that haven't won any of the OMS votes at all can be runner-ups or even have a vote where they can join the cards!

- Finally, I think that the kaiju can have life points, hit points, field effects (or some other kind of ability), etc. (Almost like Pokemon, but lets not make it too similar to that).

The thing about a card game, aside from the fact that it will only cost even more money that could be going toward the game itself, is that it would be VERY hard to  create, even if it were intended to be fairly simple. I know Ogretusk has expressed interest in the card game to the point he's already created a whole set of rules, so if this is something we're going to take seriously, I'd say put him in charge of it--complicated or not.

I'm still of the mind that we should wait until we actually have a game before we even begin to think about any of this. I'm pretty sure the majority of people who buy the CKC cards are people from the forums, and you can expect that to be the same case here. Our group being as small as it is, combined with the fact that some of us don't even have the means of paying for our own sprites, is not going to result in even remotely successful sales, as far as I can see.

One more thing to add: we don't have that many monsters compared to CKC. If we only made official kaiju and runners up eligible, we wouldn't have nearly enough monsters to make a decent trading card game. Heck, I'm not even sure if we'd have enough if we used every monster that's already been submitted here.

I agree with what SWEGM has in mind. Let's just focus on making the game for now. If we do move forward with making a card game, let OgreTusk be in charge.

I agree with the both of you guys.
I think that as soon as the game is done, then we can get to this topic.

I think that once the demo is completed, we can start working on the TGC. I'll put up a thread where people can submit combat art (for the attack cards), and Gfan14 has also shown interest in doing the art for the monster cards. Once the demo is complete, I will mostly take a break from game development for a couple of weeks or a month (game development gets exhausting after a while), so I can then focus on trading cards and comics. Sound like a plan?

Sounds like a pretty good plan! But how about when we need to actually put it into production? How will that work out?

I wouldn't mind being the head behind the card game :D  The arts should have to be color, and of pretty good or better quality.  If you would like, I could post my idea for game rules here, and get comments on improvements.  It never hurts to get the ideas flowing very early on this sort of thing so we don't miss anything.  Heck, after we cover these basics, I'll playtest with a friend of mine who would totally be willing to help me figure it out(the creator of jagdhund).

Go ahead & post the rules bro!
I doubt that my ideas for the game will even work out, but I can personally try to do the art (or even use Woody's art for the monster cards)

Spread out card game idea:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You pick one kaiju to become for this battle.  -This is the good part of the ckc card game
Stats for kaiju are:---
Belly: how much damage it can take before you lose.
Grit: how much health you regain each turn in the Churn phase.
Tough: how much damage is immediately subtracted from attacks on this kaiju.
Brute: how much additional damage is dealt when attacking.
*Each kaiju card can have cool additional abilities also
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game starts with 5 cards from your deck(minimum 40 cards)
-The board is just 2 territories with a straight line between them.
-To use attacks, you must have enough energy to play them.  They have a learning cost of additional energy that is spent one time to put the attack into play in your territory, and the use cost, which is spent every time you use that attack
-Energy is drawn from various cards in your deck.  It is recommended that you have 1/3 of your deck be energy.  There are 4 different kinds of energy.  Nuclear, Toxic, Oil, and Spiritual.  You consume an energy item by turning it sideways on the board.   It can be refilled once each turn.
-Other cards in your deck can be Ally Assist, with a limit of 2 per deck, and Reflex.  Ally Assist gets you a powerful attack from the ally shown in the card, but only once, then it is dumped.  Reflex cards allows you to react to your opponent's attack with a chance to cancel the attack and force the opponent to dump it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Turns are taken one player at a time and consist of phases called:---
-Churn: Regain Belly equal to your Grit, but not beyond your starting amount.  Refill all your energy items.
-Plot: Draw 1 card, and play up to 1 energy card from your hand onto your territory.  Optionally put into play any attacks you have the energy to learn and use in the same turn(you can't learn it without using it that turn also)
-Rumble: either A} Dump 2 cards from your hand, and consume any amount of the energy from your energy items to unleash your weapon attack which for every 2 energy (and then subtracting Tough)removes 1 Belly OR B} Consume energy from your energy items in order to use an attack, calculate damage adding Brute and subtracting the enemy's Tough, and remove Belly, then if you have enough energy, you may consume more energy to use another different attack and use the same math process to remove more Belly.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Each phase must be declared so that no one misses anything.  If you forget to Plot, then it's your own fault when you declare Rumble(though friendly opponents might remind you and allow you a step back)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A coin flip is used to determine who gets the first turn.  Energy may not be played on the first turn of the player who goes first.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The game ends when all Belly is removed from a player, no matter what phase it is.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If a player runs out of cards in his deck, that player loses Belly equal to the amount of Energy items in that player's territory at the end of his/her Plot phase.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

^^^This is exactly why Ogretusk should be in charge of anything TCG related. That's as simple a set of rules you'll get and still have a decent game.

That said, I still think you're getting way ahead of yourself G&G. It's going to take money to print all of these, and I honestly don't believe it'll be money you'll make back because I haven't seen any interest in a card game aside from a handful of people. Based on the success you've currently had getting people to purchase things from the store, I hope you're not expecting these to sell well. I'm just being honest. The main thing everyone is here for is the game, and the more side projects you try to get them involved in, the more likely that they could end up losing interest in BOA altogether. I get that you have big plans for BOA, but things like this take a lot of time and money if you want them to be successful. I probably sound like a broken record at this point, but I reiterate all of these things because they're important.

First off, thanks :D  I played quite a few tcgs and I have a feel for what makes em fun.
Secondly, I don't think we're rushing forward with this.  It's more of a back-burner project that G&G has plans for after the release and probable success of his flash game :D
Finally, Any suggestions on what is missing?   Suggestions for good abilities(vague general things that could be expanded upon to be applied to particular characters according to their ... um... character?  lol

@Ogre Tusk, amazing set of rules man!
I have a question though-

What happens if a kaiju doesn't have nuclear, spiritual, oil, or toxic energy? As in, what if it doesn't even fit the kaiju? How about "neutral" or even "Alien"?
Neutral should probably be given to the kaiju that don't really have an energy or if they don't resemble any of those other energy elements; same for Alien, but it should be given to "Space/Alien" kaiju (like Martian Marauder).

There could be a 5th energy type, but I'd balk at adding a 6th.  Remember we have to have  cards for each energy type(and hopefully several arts for each type also.

Your rules sound simple but by the time you flesh the game out, I guarantee it'll be basically as complicated as CKC's card game.

The first iteration of the card game should have been perfect: one deck of combat cards with unique effects based on kaiju affinities and attributes, and an ever-growing number of kaiju to use with the game. Buy a starter pack and get all the demo kaiju along with the combat cards needed to play the game, and then later on release expansion cards, too.
